According to this breed’s owners, it is an adorable, tiny, fuzzy teddy bear with incredible intelligence. It has a lively, lovable and kind personality. Loves taking part in family outings and all kinds of play activities. It is a well-balanced, non-nervous, charming, kind, and smart little dog. Considering all its characteristics, we get a sweet doggy that is impossible to resist.
Being a breed of adaptable and company-loving nature, it hardly ever has any issues with other dogs or pets. It can be recommended especially for families that keep several dogs. The Havanese tolerates cats as well, especially if they have been raised together. When well-known family friends arrive for a visit, it welcomes them with great joy. This breed does not tend to bark.
The Havanese, just like every long-haired breed, requires regular grooming. With everyday brushing, its hair cannot form mats so easily, so we can perform this procedure more quickly and with less hair loss. It is a misconception that this breed cannot tolerate summer heat, since the Havanese, as we know, originates from Cuba, where the climate is much hotter and more humid than that of the temperate zone. These dogs’ hair has adapted to tropical climate: it allows the air flow while protecting the dog’s skin from damaging sun rays. Bathing is recommended once a month, but this may vary depending on the sensitivity of the dog’s skin.
The Bichon Havanese demands its owner’s attention continuously and loves being in the center. This is one of the exceptionally intelligent breeds. It is easy to train because it loves learning and it is smart enough to understand what the trainer expects. It is a very sensitive breed, so it should be taught and trained with love at all times. We should never be rude to a Bichon Havanese: too harsh of training would only make it shy and nervous!
The best results can only be achieved if we reward proper behaviour. The owner must be consistent and use his or her voice often to signal whether he or she is satisfied or not.
Despite its small size, it is an especially active and mobile breed that can be taken even on big family outings without any worries. It is a tough little dog; a little rain or wind will not scare it away from a good walk or run. Agility is also an excellent way to occupy this breed, since it is very active and clever.
