The breed is known of being constantly cheerful. It seems to be wagging its tail without a break. It is gentle and friendly, lively and kind. Its intellectual capabilities should not be underestimated. Although it is usually very responsive and obedient, it does have a strain of stubbornness. His sense of smell is excellent, and he loves water. It is cheerful, sociable nature can unfold fully only if it lives inside a home, together with its family.
In general, it gets along fine with other dogs. Cats or other pets do not pose a problem for it, either. It is patient with children but does not tolerate to be treated like a toy. When it senses trouble or the arrival of strangers, it raises its voice, despite of which it still cannot be regarded as a real guard dog or protection dog. It takes a good sniff at every visitor, then gives them an enthusiastic welcome.
Without very frequent brushing and combing, the coat of the English Cocker Spaniel quickly becomes matted. The hair growing between the legs at the top of the legs and on the ears deserves special attention. Its ears have to be checked on a regular basis; the pieces of hair growing around the ear canal have to be trimmed; ear infections can be prevented this way. It is advisable to take the English Cocker Spaniel to a pet salon 2 to 4 times a year.
